how to apply

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • a paragraph describing the last year's program and its effectiveness
  • a list of 4-5 TA training program goals or expected TA competencies as a result of the training program. (See example competences here)
  • a list of the TA Training Requirements as defined by the department and a short description of the training activities that support those requirements. (Example activities include TA manuals on teaching within the discipline; TA training seminar courses (include draft of syllabus); periodic workshops on teaching (include topics to be addressed); classroom observations by faculty or Lead TAs; and TADP videotaping and consultation.)
  • an assessment plan (Examples include self-assessments of new TAs before and after the department's TA training program; evaluation of specific goals of the department's TA training through self-report, student ratings, or formal examinations; TA assessment of the various training activities offered including strengths and weaknesses of those activities; parison of student ratings of TAs over the past 5 years or before and after specific changes in the TA Training program; departmental TA training survey of TAs from previous years compared to current year to assess programmatic improvements; and survey of TAs who have graduated in which they are asked to rate and comment on their level of teaching preparedness.)
  • names of faculty coordinators and Lead TAs for 07-08 • an itemized budget (No funding will be awarded for refreshments, photocopying, or notebooks.)

Department chairs, or faculty TA training coordinators with chair support, are invited to submit a description of proposed TA training activities and budget to Ronald W. Tobin, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs. To discuss particulars, including budget, contact Shirley Ronkowski (x4289). Submit your proposal to <proposal@id.ucsb.edu> or the Office of Instructional Development; 1130 Kerr Hall.

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION IS AT THE END OF JUNE. SPECIFIC DATES ARE ANNOUNCED EACH YEAR ON THE TITLE PAGES OF THE TADP AND OIC WEBSITES AND IN THE CALL FOR PROPOSALS EMAILED TO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND OFFICE MANAGERS.

Proposals may be submitted online to proposal@id.ucsb.edu or in print to Instructional Development 1130 Kerr Hall; Mail Code 3200. Notification of awards will be made in mid to late July.

Proposals are reviewed in early July of each year by Associate Vice Chancellor Ronald Tobin. Notification of awards is made in mid to late July.
